By ten o’clock the police organisation, and by midday even the railway organisations, were losing coherency, losing shape and efficiency, guttering, softening, running at last in that swift liquefaction of the social body.

I thought that was a really well written metaphor.

Save that an unknown element giving a group of four lines in the blue of the spectrum is concerned

I guess science fiction writes can't fall back on the new element justification now days but in the 1890's they were still finding new elements with interesting properties pretty rapidly.

Would the Londoners have the heart and courage to make a greater Moscow of their mighty province of houses?

I think this a reference to the Fire of Moscow when Napoleon invaded and the civilian population fled in 1812.

His landlady came to the door, loosely wrapped in dressing gown and shawl; her husband followed ejaculating.

Well the first-read meaning of that sentence has certainly changed over the years.

Apparently a cockchafer is a type of beetle. Sure seems like an odd name. I wonder what the origin is.

When men shall call upon the mountains and the rocks to fall upon them and hide them–hide them from the face of Him that sitteth upon the throne!

This one is from Revelations 6:16:

And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
