I guess science fiction writes can't fall back on the new element justification now days but in the 1890's they were still &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_of_the_chemical_elements" rel="nofollow"&gt;finding new elements&lt;/a&gt; with interesting properties pretty rapidly.</description>
